Bolivia passes emergency law amid protests and roadblocks

Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz has signed a new law regulating states of emergency, linking the move to weeks of protests and roadblocks disrupting the country.

Speaking in La Paz, Paz said the law aims to protect the majority and defend the democratic process, while maintaining dialogue with protesters. The government is expected to define how and when the measure could be enforced in the coming hours.

Authorities have accused violent groups of driving the unrest, with reports of armed clashes leaving police officers injured. Ongoing blockades have also disrupted food supplies, causing sharp price increases in La Paz and El Alto.
