Sheinbaum investigates claims of Mexican cartel members fighting in Ukraine
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Thursday that authorities are investigating allegations that members of Mexican drug cartels are fighting in Ukraine.
Speaking at a press conference in Mexico City, Sheinbaum said investigators were examining videos circulating online that allegedly show cartel members wearing Ukrainian military uniforms and shouting cartel slogans.
“Investigations are being carried out to see if the videos are real or not,” she said, adding that authorities were also looking into how individuals potentially linked to criminal organisations could have joined the conflict.
Sheinbaum suggested that recruitment could have taken place through private military companies or other organisations involved in the war, but stressed that the authenticity of the footage had yet to be established.
She also confirmed that Mexico had not contacted the Ukrainian government over the allegations, although diplomatic communication could be initiated if necessary.

The investigation follows recent unverified reports alleging that Mexican and Colombian cartel members have been recruited to receive private training in drone operations linked to the conflict in Ukraine.
