Ukraine protests erupt over Fedorov dismissal as pressure mounts on Zelensky
Hundreds of protesters took to the streets in Ukraine on Friday July 24, denouncing the dismissal of former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov and demanding immediate political change.
Demonstrations began in the southern city of Odessa before spreading nationwide, with rallies also reported in Kyiv, Kharkiv and other major cities. Protesters waved Ukrainian flags and chanted “Bring back Fedorov,” while accusing the government of undermining reform efforts. Signs reading “We need solutions, not schemes” reflected growing frustration over political decisions during wartime.
Fedorov, widely credited with advancing Ukraine’s digital transformation and expanding drone capabilities in the conflict, was dismissed by President Volodymyr Zelensky on July 15 as part of a broader government reshuffle. While Zelensky defended the move by refusing to disclose details for security reasons, the decision has sparked backlash and exposed tensions within Ukraine’s leadership, including reported disagreements over military command.
