Thailand has joined a list of countries to launch a digital nomad visa.

This visa legally allows visitors to work remotely for a foreign country and receive foreign income for an extended period.

Launched on June 1, remote workers can stay in the country for up to five years with the “Destination Thailand Visa’ (DTV).

Before this, digital nomads could only stay in Thailand using tourist visas for a 60-day period. According to TimeOut, the move forms part of efforts to boost tourism and the Thai economy.

Applicants must be self-employed or work remotely for a foreign company to access the digital nomad visa. They should also be at least 20 years old. Visitors also pursuing cultural activities in Thailand can request digital nomad visas.

An application fee of 10,000 Thai baht ($270) is needed as part of the requirements for the visa. Also, persons with the visa will need to leave and re-enter the country after every 180 days, paying an extra $270 each time.

Thailand joins countries like Greece, Spain Indonesia, Costa Rica, and Iceland, which also provide digital nomad visas for visitors.
