A popular South African TikToker, Matthew Lani, has been arrested in Gauteng for impersonation.

The incident happened earlier this week after he tried to sneak into a Johannesburg hospital, reports News 24.

The spokesperson for Gauteng Department of Health, Motalatale Modiba said Lani was caught before 20.00 disguised in a hoodie and wearing a surgical mask with a stethoscope around his neck.

Lani had “previously entered the same facility to curate misleading content under the pretence that he was a qualified doctor,” Modiba was quoted by News 24.

The suspect, after he was apprehended, tried to escape through the bathroom window after he had told hospital security personnel that he had wanted to use it. He was found out and seized again before he was transferred to the police.

The 24-year-old is known for his impersonation tactics as he was previously caught presenting himself as an employee of the Gauteng health department at the hospital in Johannesburg where he claimed to be a medicine graduate from the University of Witwatersrand.

He had also posed as a registered member of the Health Professions Council of South Africa, with claims that he obtained a high school diploma from the Cambridge International College and he used the credentials of a practising doctor to fool hospital staff at Tembisa.

South African Police Services’ Directorate (Hawks) spokesperson, Colonel Katlego Mogale who confirmed the incident said, "It is alleged that the suspect was seen on Friday 27 October 2023 at the hospital, reportedly making videos, and hospital staff were informed to be on the lookout for him. On Sunday, the suspect was seen in the hospital premises and apprehended by the security guards, then handed over to the Brixton police."

Lani is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
