A Zimbabwean has been charged for attempting to smuggle 440 master boxes of cigarettes worth R9.6 million ($5m) into South Africa.

27-year-old Oswald Raisi was found guilty by the court for violating immigration rules when he appeared in court and was charged with possession of illicit cigarettes, reports The Sunday Mail.

The accused might spend 5 years in jail if he fails to pay the fine of R5 million ($2m), according to the Polokwane Specialised Commercial Crimes Court.

He was also given an additional eight-year jail term over attempts to bribe South African police with R30,000 ($1,600) after the cigarettes were discovered under cotton oil cake.

Oswald Raisi was arrested at Beitbridge Border Post on May 20 together with his co-accused Marshal Masiya.
