78-year-old Guatemalan firefighter Santa rappels 75-metre bridge every Christmas for local kids: Video
For the 27th consecutive year, Hector Chacon, a firefighter and major in Guatemala City's municipal fire department, donned his Santa Claus costume and rappelled from the 75-metre-high Las Vacas bridge to bring Christmas joy to children from low-income neighbourhoods.
Chacon's descent from the former railroad crossing in the northern part of the city has become a cherished tradition for local families.
"I thank God for allowing me to do this 27 times in a row," said the 78-year-old firefighter, reflecting on the continuity of his mission. "The children in this area have been waiting for Santa Claus to come and give them a present for Christmas."
Residents like Ana Meda celebrate Chacon’s dedication, with many eagerly anticipating his annual appearance. "It's a very nice feeling because they love to see how he comes down from the bridge, and they are going to welcome him with great joy; year after year, they wait for him," Meda told AFP.
Her young daughter is among the children who count down the days until Santa's visit. "She keeps asking, 'When is Santa coming down?'" she shared.
