A look at the 5 oldest universities worldwide
Education taking place in a four-cornered area has evolved through the centuries.
Through it all, some institutions stood the test of time with some dating back to the 800 ADs.
Here is a list of the five oldest universities in history:
University of al-Qarawiyyin
The University of al-Qarawiyyin, located in Fez, Morocco, is recognised as the oldest continuously operating educational institution in the world. Fatima al-Fihri founded it in 857–859 AD as a mosque, and it gradually developed into a leading spiritual and educational centre during the Islamic Golden Age.
University of Bologna
The University of Bologna is the second oldest university in continuous operation. Founded in 1088, it has been a light of learning for over nine centuries. Known as the "Nourishing Mother of the Studies," it has produced numerous notable alumni, including popes and several Italian politicians.
University of Oxford
The exact founding date of the University of Oxford is unclear, but evidence of teaching dates back to 1096. It is the oldest university in the English-speaking world and has a prestigious list of alumni, including 28 UK Prime Ministers and 50 Nobel Prize winners. Oxford continues to be a leading global institution.
University of Paris (Sorbonne)
The University of Paris, often called the Sorbonne, was established around 1150. Although it was temporarily dissolved during the French Revolution, it was re-established in the 19th century. The Sorbonne has been a major influence in European intellectual history.
University of Salamanca
Founded in 1134, the University of Salamanca is Spain's oldest university. It gained prominence in the late 15th century when Christopher Columbus presented his case for royal support for his Indies expedition. The university remains a significant centre for learning in Spain.
