Kenyan politician and former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga has said Africa will seek alternative partners if U.S. President-elect Donald Trump chooses not to work with the continent.

Odinga, one of four candidates running to replace the current African Union Commission chair, Moussa Faki Mahamat, next year, spoke in Addis Ababa shortly after Trump’s recent election win.

“I don’t want to prejudge him or make assumptions,” Odinga told the AFP. “If he wants to work with Africa as a friend, we will welcome him and work with him.”

He added, “If he does not want to work with Africa, of course, Africa has got other friends.”

This comes after Trump’s win in the just-ended elections on November 5. Many have since expressed concerns about potential foreign policy on the continent under his administration, particularly following previous mixed signals on international cooperation.
