Geert Wilders, the leader of the right-wing and populist party in the Netherlands, renowned for outspoken criticism of Islam, secured a notable triumph in the nation's parliamentary elections.

After a quarter-century of being part of the parliament, his "Party for Freedom" (PVV) has secured 37 seats, placing it significantly ahead of its nearest competitor, a leftist coalition.

"No one can ignore PVV anymore. We will form a government,” Wilders commented.

His triumph is seen as a seismic event in Dutch politics and is anticipated to reverberate across Europe. Nevertheless, he must forge alliances with other parties and establish a coalition government.

Wilders has consistently adopted an anti-Islamic stance over the years, but in the recent election campaign, he spoke more moderately and concentrated on economic issues affecting lower-income groups, as well as addressing the country's housing shortage.

However, his party's agenda continues to advocate for the prohibition of the Quran, mosques, and the Islamic veil in the Netherlands.

"The Dutch people have now voted to deal with the refugee tsunami,” he said in a speech after his victory.
