Argentina calls for release of soldier detained in Venezuela amid rising tensions
Argentine President Javier Milei has called for the immediate release of Nahuel Gallo, an Argentine soldier detained in Venezuela for reportedly visiting family.
Speaking at a military event, Milei described Gallo's arrest as part of a larger conflict with Venezuelan authorities led by President Nicolás Maduro.
Gallo was apprehended on December 8 while entering Venezuela from Colombia; Milei asserted the soldier's only offence was visiting his wife and son.
In response, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil dismissed Milei's remark, accusing the Argentine leaders of being involved in a "terrorist plan" against the nation.
He stated that Gallo is being processed according to Venezuela's judicial system and claimed the arrest was based on substantial evidence.
"We demand his immediate release and we'll exhaust all diplomatic paths to return him safely to Argentina," Milei said.
The diplomatic strain between Argentina and Venezuela has escalated since the controversial presidential elections in Venezuela, which Milei's government labelled as fraudulent.
Despite allusions to potential diplomatic repercussions, the two nations have not severed formal ties. Milei remains critical of Maduro’s administration, advocating for Gallo’s release through all possible diplomatic channels.
Meanwhile, Venezuelan officials, including Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello, allege that Gallo was sent on a "mission," although no clarifying details have emerged from their assertions.
