What we know

  • Sudanese warring factions have failed to reach a ceasefire agreement in the new round of Jeddah peace talk negotiations.
  • The Saudi Kingdom, the US and the regional bloc Intergovernmental Authority on Development (Igad) mediated the ceasefire negotiation between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
  • The RSF has allegedly accused the Sudan army of shelling the Al-Jili Petroleum refinery.
  • The conflict erupted in April 2023 between troops, with fealty to the Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Forces of General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.
  • There have been significant humanitarian crises and economic downturns following the crisis.

 What they said

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in a press statement said, “The co-facilitators regret that the parties were unable to agree on ceasefire implementation arrangements during this first round. There is no acceptable military solution to this conflict…we are able to announce that the Sudan army and the RSF have committed to take steps to facilitate increased humanitarian assistance and to implement confidence-building measures.”
