Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday sent condolences to the presidents of Azerbaijan, Russia and Kazakhstan for the casualties caused by the Azerbaijan Airlines plane crash, China's state broadcaster CCTV reported.

The plane, an Embraer passenger jet, crashed near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan on Wednesday, killing at least 38 people, after diverting from an area of Russia that Moscow has recently defended against Ukrainian drone attacks.

Xi expressed condolences to the victims and their families, and wished the injured a speedy recovery, CCTV reported.
