Comoros President Azali Assoumani has made his first public appearance since a knife attack on September 13.

The president was attacked by a knifeman while attending a religious leader’s funeral near the capital Moroni.

He however sustained very minimal injuries.

The president was seen in video footage from the presidency, arriving with a bandage on the left side of his forehead, ahead of a Council of Ministers meeting in the capital Moroni some six days after his attack.

The president was captured smiling as he got into a car and when he arrived at the presidential compound.

He interacted with members of the council before sitting at the end of the cabinet table to begin proceedings.

President Azali first came to power through a military coup in 1999.

After ten years out of office, he came to power in 2016, in an election that was highly disputed.

He was again re-elected in January 2024 in another contested election which was marred by allegations of ballot stuffing and was followed by two days of deadly protests.

Mr Azali has been accused of growing authoritarianism.
