Editorial Policy

Global South World's mission and guidelines

Mission

The international media is overwhelmingly based in the US and Europe, and significant players outside these countries are almost exclusively state-managed. And yet most of the world’s people, and the impetus behind the global economy, come from the rising nations of Africa, Asia and South America.

Global South World will rebalance the media landscape. We will go beyond the simplistic once-a-year coverage of these vibrant and diverse nations and peoples.

We aim to amplify voices from the global south to raise awareness of the changes and trends affecting those countries. We will put a focus on solutions journalism and reject stereotypes, parachute journalism and condescension.

Practice

To do this, we will need to embody the highest standards of international reporting. We will be transparent about our sources and newsgathering. We will credit all those involved in storytelling, wherever they might be based, unless reasons of personal security or safety prevent it. Our reporters are humans; they all have their cultural backgrounds and different upbringings. However, by developing the most diverse editorial operation, with representatives from different continents collaborating, we will build systems that ensure our reporting is always balanced. We do not aim to judge who is right or wrong, we will simply attempt to provide facts and context to allow our readers to make their own decisions.

We will seek to respect different viewpoints and sensitivities in our reporting.

When we make mistakes, we will acknowledge them and correct them as swiftly as possible.

Distribution

Global South World will put quality first. This means that we may not always be able to make all our content available on every platform. Our priority will be to create an excellent experience on our website, globalsouthworld.com. We will also endeavour to reach audiences through other channels because we believe that information is necessary for everyone. We will not allow social media platforms, through their algorithms or other incentives, to manipulate the stories we produce, which will always be an editorial decision. We are a multi-media organisation and communicate in whatever format is the best way to tell each story, whether that is text, video, images or something else.

Disturbing content

While the Global South World will seek to tell positive stories and celebrate success, we will not shy away from the problems afflicting the world. As a serious news site, we will cover unpleasant and disturbing subjects. We will seek to do this with sensitivity for those involved and for those who witness through our content.

We will be cautious about any imagery which shows death or serious injury and will use such material only where editorially necessary and with appropriate warnings.

Partners

Global South World will collaborate with different partners to increase the range and impact of our mission. We will only work with partners that are trustworthy and respect our editorial rules. We will be transparent about which partners we work with. Partners with whom we have ongoing relationships include:

Reuters for articles on global news and photographs

Gjirafa for technical support and development

Wochit for video production

Cookie Script for user consent management

AI

We have entered an era of Artificial Intelligence, which will transform many aspects of our lives. The media industry is no exception. AI can be a valuable resource to improve our reporting, but it also presents risks to trust.

Any first use of AI by the Global South World will be cleared by the editor or their deputy.

We will generally avoid using AI to create realistic fictional or imagined scenarios to ensure there is no risk of misleading our audiences. We will acknowledge the use of AI wherever we have created content that might appear to have originated from actual real-life images, still or moving.

We may use AI to improve our content production, for example, through translation, adapting stories into different formats or removing errors.

Commercial

Global South World is a private business and will raise money to fund our journalism through a variety of means. These may in future include advertising, subscription, affiliate partnerships or other routes. We will declare clearly wherever payment or other commercial benefits have influenced the creation or positioning of content. We will only work with trusted companies that we feel offer benefits to our audience.
