Argentina won their record-breaking 16th Copa America title after defeating Colombia in a thrilling match in the absence of Lionel Messi at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium.

Despite the Argentine captain being forced off with an ankle injury in the second half, forward Lautaro Martinez scored the decisive goal in extra time, securing a 1-0 victory over Colombia and ending their 28-match unbeaten streak.

This win marks Argentina's third consecutive major tournament victory under coach Lionel Scaloni. “I don’t know if we’ve defined an era, but this team no longer surprises me. We improved in the second half and deserved to win. It’s gratifying to watch the team play,” Scaloni said.

With Messi visibly emotional on the sidelines after his injury, the 37-year-old football icon's likely final major international tournament ended on a bittersweet note. However, he joined in jubilation as Argentina celebrated their Copa America win, lifting the trophy amidst smiles.

The match was delayed for more than an hour due to unauthorized fans attempting to enter the stadium. Despite this, inside the 65,300-capacity venue, Argentine fans celebrated passionately as their team secured the historic victory.

Argentina finished first in Group A with victories over Canada, Chile, and Peru. They progressed to the semifinals after defeating Ecuador in a penalty shootout. In the semifinals, they secured another win against Canada to advance to their fourth final in five attempts.

The win cements Argentina's status as a dominant team in South American football and makes them the all-time most successful team in the competition’s long history.
