Daniel Chapo was sworn in as the president of Mozambique on Wednesday, extending the Frelimo party's half-century-long rule in the gas-rich African nation.

The inauguration follows months of unrest sparked by disputed election results, with an NGO reporting over 300 fatalities linked to post-election violence.

In his oath of office, Chapo, 48, pledged to uphold the Constitution, promote national unity, and prioritise the well-being of the Mozambican people.

"I, Daniel Francisco Chapo, swear on my honour to respect and enforce the Constitution... to devote all my energies to the defence, promotion, and consolidation of national unity, human rights, democracy, and the well-being of the Mozambican people," he declared.

The October 2024 election has been mired in controversy, with opposition candidate Venancio Mondlane alleging widespread electoral fraud. The claims have fuelled tensions across the country, prompting calls from international observers for transparency and dialogue to address the political crisis.

Chapo's presidency continues the Frelimo dominance, which has spanned over five decades in Mozambique's politics.
