Deadliest plane crashes in the U.S. since 2001

The United States has experienced its share of devastating plane crashes since 2001, resulting in significant loss of life and widespread devastation.

The most recent was the collision between an American Airlines regional passenger jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter on Wednesday, January 29, near Reagan Washington National Airport.

According to a report by Reuters, here are some of the deadliest plane crashes to occur in the U.S. since 2001:

American Airlines Flight 587 (2001)

Fatalities - 265

On November 12, 2001, American Airlines Flight 587 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Queens, New York, killing 260 people on board and 5 on the ground. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) attributed the crash to pilot error.

Corporate Airlines Flight 5966 (2004)

Fatalities - 13

On October 19, tragedy struck when Corporate Airlines Flight 5966, travelling from St. Louis to Kirksville, crashed just two miles short of Kirksville Airport during its final landing approach. The devastating accident resulted in the loss of 13 lives, with only two survivors among the 15 people on board. The consequences of the crash were catastrophic, leaving a lasting impact on the families of the victims and the survivors.

Comair Flight 191 (2006)

August 27, 2006, marked a devastating day in aviation history when Comair Flight 191 crashed during takeoff in Lexington, Kentucky. The catastrophic accident occurred after the aircraft veered off the wrong runway, ultimately running off the end. Tragically, the incident claimed the lives of two crew members and 47 passengers.

Colgan Air Flight 3407 (2009)

On February 12, 2009, Colgan Air Flight 3407 crashed into a house in Clarence Centre, Buffalo, killing all 49 people on board and one person on the ground. The NTSB cited pilot error and inadequate training as contributing factors.

Asiana Airlines Flight 214 (2013)

On July 6, 2013, Asiana Airlines Flight 214 crashed while landing at San Francisco International Airport, killing three people and injuring over 180. The NTSB attributed the crash to pilot error and inadequate training.

Atlas Air Flight 3591 (2019)

On February 23, 2019, Atlas Air Flight 3591 crashed into Trinity Bay in Texas, killing all three people on board.
