The global population has witnessed a remarkable surge, escalating from 1.65 billion in 1900 to 6 billion at the close of the 20th century, and has now reached an estimated 8.1 billion individuals as of early June 2024.

According to Worldometers, the world's population as of June 17, 2024 stands at 8,116,329,925. This figure, however, is susceptible to increase by the close of the day.

The projection from the United Nations Population Division suggests that the world population is on course to hit approximately 9.7 billion by the year 2050, with an anticipated peak of about 10.4 billion during the 2080s.

Apart from the substantial projections of the United Nations, nations in the Global South, including India, China, and Nigeria, add significantly large figures to the overall global population count.

India

With an astonishing 1.428 billion individuals, India stands as the world's most populous nation, surpassing China. With a land area of 2.9 million square kilometres, the country contributes 17.76% of the world's population. India's demographic landscape is marked by a youthful population, with a median age of around 28 years.

China

China boasts a population of 1.425 billion and ranks as the second-largest country with a large population in the world. China unfortunately has an aging population over the youth with the median age staying at 39. Contributing 17.72% of the world's population, China enjoys a land area of 9.3 million square kilometres which is surprisingly bigger than that of the world's most populous country, India.

Indonesia

Indonesia, the fourth most populous country globally and the largest in Southeast Asia has a population of 277 million. The nation boasts a youthful population with a median age of 30 years. With a land area of 1.8 million square kilometres, it produces 3.45% of the global population.

Pakistan

Pakistan is one of the most populous countries in the Global South with individuals numbering 240 million. The country's demographic profile is characterised by a young population with a median age of 21. It takes the fifth spot of the global population with a percentage of 2.99%.

Nigeria

In Africa, Nigeria is the most populous country, with an individual count of 223 million. It is, however, the sixth largest population globally. Nigeria's large and youthful population offers significant potential for economic growth and regional leadership with a median age of 17.
