EU vows 'unwavering' support for Ukraine after Trump win: Video
Josep Borrell, the European Union's foreign policy chief, visited Kyiv on Saturday to reaffirm the EU’s strong and ongoing support for Ukraine
This is the first visit to the country by a senior Brussels official since Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election. The visit comes amid growing concerns in Ukraine and Europe that Trump could cut back U.S. aid to Ukraine, especially in light of his campaign promises to reconsider American involvement in the war.
Borrell told reporters that the EU's support for Ukraine remains "unwavering," despite political uncertainty following Trump's election.
"The purpose of this visit is to stress the European Union's support for Ukraine. This support remains unwavering," AFP quoted him.
Trump has raised concerns in Ukraine and Europe by suggesting during his campaign that he might scale back U.S. military and financial assistance to Kyiv.
He also hinted that he could strike a deal with Russia to end the war, which has caused nervousness among those who view American support as vital to Ukraine’s defence.
While acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding Trump's foreign policy, Borrell noted that President Joe Biden still has two months left in office to influence U.S. policy. "Nobody knows exactly what the new administration is going to do," Borrell said.
