Flags fly at half mast as Vietnamese mourn Communist Party Leader

Vietnamese flags flew at half mast on July 25 as the country held a funeral for Communist Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong who died at a military hospital in the capital Hanoi due to old age and serious illness.

The country declared a national burial for him following his demise last week.

The 80-year-old was the most powerful leader the country had seen in decades. After liberalising the country’s economy in 1986, he was the first leader to have held three consecutive mandates.

His legacy of anti-corruption drive was well known throughout the party and many government institutions.
