FULL INTERVIEW: Egypt's ex-presidential candidate Farid Zahran discusses political future

With Farid Zahran

In an exclusive interview with GSW, Farid Zahran, Egypt's former presidential candidate in the December 2023 presidential race, said that his political future depends on internal elections in his leftist political party, the Egyptian Social Democratic Party, saying that he won't run for another term as chairman in addition to his desire to either allocate time to political or cultural action.

Zahran is an appointed member of the Egyptian Senate. He won 4% of the votes in the presidential elections held last December while Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi was reelected with 89.6%. He is also the founder of the Al-Mahrousa publishing house.

Official numbers from the National Elections Authority (NEA) show that Egypt's 2023 presidential elections witnessed the highest voter turnout in the history of Egypt reaching an "unprecedented" 66.8% among Egypt's 67 million voters.
