Germany demands Europe to be more intentional about security after Trump win: Video
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has called for Europe to take greater responsibility for its security after a US Trump win.
Speaking at a press conference in Berlin on November 6, 2024, Baerbock emphasised the need for European nations to bolster their defence capabilities and reduce their reliance on the United States.
"For me, for us, it is clear: we Europeans will now have to assume even more responsibility for security policy responsibility. Today, tomorrow, the day after tomorrow. For ourselves, for our children. We are prepared for this," she said.
Trump's victory has raised concerns about the future of transatlantic relations, particularly regarding NATO.
During his previous term, Trump frequently criticised European countries for not meeting their defence spending commitments and suggested that the U.S. might reduce its military support for NATO allies.
These statements have led European leaders to reconsider their defence strategies and increase their contributions to NATO.
Baerbock highlighted the urgency of enhancing Europe's defence infrastructure, stating, "Europe must be prepared to defend itself independently if necessary. This means investing more in our military capabilities and fostering greater cooperation among European nations."
