Jailed Guatemalan journalist José Rubén Zamora granted house arrest after struggle: Video
A Guatemalan court granted house arrest to journalist José Rubén Zamora, who has been imprisoned since July 2022 on charges of obstruction of justice, money laundering, and blackmail.
Based on human rights concerns, the decision follows international condemnation and calls for his release.
The 68-year-old Zamora, who has spent over 800 days in prison, claims his arrest is retaliation for exposing corruption. The prosecution plans to appeal despite his house arrest, citing flight risk.
His imprisonment has been criticised by various international bodies and human rights organisations. Zamora's prison conditions, described as torturous, improved after President Bernardo Arévalo took office, reports AFP.
