Illegal mining affects 29 out of 32 departments in Colombia, report: Video
Engagement in illegal mining is rising across Colombia, affecting 29 out of the country’s 32 departments, according to a government report.
The Colombian attorney general for environmental affairs, Gustavo Guerrero, said illegal mining is also happening in half of the country’s municipalities.
Gold mining is becoming a concern with nearly 90% of exported gold reportedly coming from illegal sources.
The report cited by AFP highlighted the environmental damage caused by mining, including mercury contamination at some sites, with levels exceeding safe limits by up to 160 times.
