Indonesia’s newly elected President Prabowo Subianto has received a congratulatory call from United States President Joe Biden.

The Indonesian Defence Minister Prabowo announced via social media on March 23 the call from the White House following the official declaration of the Indonesian presidential elections.

“I am deeply honored to receive a congratulatory call on the result of our election from the President of the United States, H.E. Joe Biden. I stand proud of the strong bond between Indonesia and the United States forged over many years of friendship and cooperation,” he wrote.

“We are committed to continue and enhance this partnership between our two great nations, and I look forward to working with you in the future,” he added.

Prabowo was officially declared the winner of the February 14, 2024 presidential elections by the Indonesian Election Commission (KPU) after securing 59% of the votes.

Indonesia’s election commission chief Hasyim Asy'ari in a livestream on March 20 announced the resounding win of Prabowo over rivals Anies Baswedan who received about 25% of the votes, and Ganjar Pranowo, who received 16%.

Prabowo is expected to take over the presidency of the Southeast Asian nation from outgoing President Joko Widodo in October.

His running mate Gibran Rakabuming Raka, President Jokowi's 36-year-old son, is set to become vice president.
