Iraq shuts borders over security concerns
Iraq has closed all its borders due to rising security threats, according to local reports.
The move was confirmed by Lt. Gen. Qais al-Muhammadawi, deputy commander of the Iraqi Joint Operations Command.
According to him, the borders were "entirely sealed" as authorities awaited further orders from Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani to protect the nation.
Gen. Muhammed Abdulwahab es-Suaydi, head of Iraq's Border Forces, said measures along the Iraq-Syria border had been tightened, with security efforts being reinforced.
The decision comes amid heightened concerns over regional instability, although officials have not disclosed specific threats or incidents prompting the move.
Local reports indicate that Iraq's government is taking steps to prioritise security along its borders, particularly amidst challenges from armed groups and smuggling activities.
