The Israeli army's ground operations in the Gaza Strip have reached a significant milestone as they extend into the southern city of Khan Yunis, according to an announcement made on Tuesday.

Axios Magazine reported that in a departure from the previous focus on Gaza City and the northern regions, this advance is seen as a crucial development in the ongoing Gaza war.

Israeli officials reveal that the objective of the operation in Khan Yunis is to locate and apprehend or eliminate two prominent Hamas leaders, Yahya Sanwar and Mohammad al-Deif, who are believed to be hiding in the area.

Israeli Army Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi, in a statement, emphasized the strategic importance of the ground operations in Khan Yunis.

"Those who thought the IDF didn't know how to resume fighting after the ceasefire were wrong, and now Hamas understands that very well."

He also clarified that the operation is now directed towards the Hamas strongholds in the south, marking the third phase of the ground offensive.

Simultaneously, another Israeli general confirmed that operations continue in the northern Gaza Strip, specifically in the areas of Jabalia and Shujai’iyya.

The United States has expressed concern about the potential humanitarian impact of Israel's military operation in Khan Yunis, fearing an escalation of the crisis and increased civilian casualties in the Gaza Strip.

In recent days, the Israeli army issued a map designating large parts of southern Gaza as a war zone, urging residents to evacuate. Approximately two million Palestinians have already relocated from the north to the south due to the conflict.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated that Israeli military operations will persist until all stated objectives are achieved.

The primary goals include the destruction of Hamas and the release of hostages. The ongoing ground operations underscore Israel's commitment to achieving these aims.
