Israel targets Iranian proxies in Syria; Tehran vows retaliation in wake of Gaza conflict
Tensions escalate in the Middle East as Israel conducts airstrikes targeting bases affiliated with Hezbollah and the Islamic Republic in the suburbs of Damascus, resulting in the killing of two members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
In response, the spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Nasser Kanaani, issued a stern warning, asserting that the Islamic Republic would retaliate against any assault on its forces.
"No action against Iran, Iran's interests, and our advisory forces in Syria will go without a response, and those who take action and have taken action know of this,” Kanaani said.
The exchange follows a series of attacks and counterattacks between Israel and Iranian proxies in the region.
After the recent conflict in Gaza, rockets were fired from Syria into Israel, prompting Israeli airstrikes on Syrian bases associated with Hezbollah and the Islamic Republic.
Israel's missile attacks targeted Damascus International Airport and Aleppo airport on multiple occasions.
The situation extends beyond Syria, with the "Islamic Resistance Group of Iraq" and other factions aligned with the Islamic Republic conducting over 70 attacks against American bases in Iraq and Syria.
In response, the United States has targeted bases affiliated with the Islamic Republic of Iraq in Iraq.
Recent reports from Iraqi authorities reveal that five militants associated with groups aligned with the Islamic Republic were killed in the north of the Iraqi city of Kirkuk on December 4th.
Additionally, Yemen's Houthi Shiites have launched rocket and drone attacks on the Israeli port city of Eilat and attacked ships in the Red Sea.
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that Houthi Shiites attacked three commercial vessels in the southern waters of the Red Sea, rescued by the American ship USS Carney.
One of the targeted ships, "Unity Explorer," belongs to the United Kingdom. The British government condemned the Houthi militia's attack on commercial ships, holding the Islamic Republic responsible for the actions of its proxies.
The region remains on edge as geopolitical tensions continue to unfold.
