Lesotho constructs Africa's first sustainable stadium built with timber
Lesotho has made history with the establishment of Africa’s foremost Forest Stewardship Council-certified timber stadium (FSC).
The 1,800-seater facility constructed primarily from sustainable timber is aimed at enhancing a unique relationship between football and the environment.
It is located in the capital and largest city of Lesotho, Maseru.
Named the “Stadium of life”, the facility aims to also promote health, education and employment prospects of disadvantaged persons in the country.
The concept, according to Green Economy Media, was developed in 2023 in collaboration with construction induction graduates from Rise International’s flagship design and build training programme during a 10-month fellowship.
The project is being spearheaded by local charity and football club Kick4life (K4L), Rise International, the Forest Stewardship Council and international certification body DNV.
“The stadium is designed a multi-purpose facility that extends beyond sport, but also acts as a hub for diverse activities, including climate change education, gender empowerment, academic tutoring, health testing, and entrepreneurship training,” Motlatsi Nkhahle, country director of K4L, was quoted by Green Economy Media.
The stadium of life holds different facilities including an integrated education and HIV testing facilities, an 11-a-side 4G artificial pitch, restaurants and conference centre.
The stadium will also include several unique environmental features including integrated garden areas and more than 50 indigenous trees and shrubs planted in the surrounding grounds to promote biodiversity and reduce carbon emissions.
Local art & culture will also be represented through some exciting design features.
