'Maasai Olympics' replace lion hunting, welcome women: Video
Hundreds gathered at the Kimana Reserve, about 200 kilometers from Nairobi, to witness the "Maasai Olympics," featuring 160 athletes, including 40 young women. The event replaces the traditional "Olamayio," a Maasai rite of passage where young men hunted lions to demonstrate their skills, choose leaders, and attract partners. "Since we started the Maasai Olympics in 2012, there hasn't been a single lion hunt planned by the warriors," said Samuel Kaanki, the event's coordinator. While women currently compete in only the 100 and 1,500 meters, organizers are planning to expand their participation in future editions.
