Shukri Osman Muse, a 25-year-old trailblazer, is turning heads and breaking barriers in the streets of Mogadishu.

In just one year since taking up horseback riding, she has become Somalia’s first female equestrian, earning admiration and respect in a country where such a role is unprecedented for women.

"It was my dream to ride a horse confidently through the streets of the city, without fear of traffic or the reactions of people. I also wanted to show everyone that it is entirely normal for women to ride horses," Muse told the AFP.

Muse’s trainer, Yahye Moallim Isse, lauded her as a pioneer. "She is one of Somalia’s women pioneers and the first female equestrian to ride a horse in Mogadishu. Her achievement is an inspiration to all Somali people, wherever they may be. This event also plays a significant role in raising awareness among our people about the importance of horses," he said.

Despite facing cultural and logistical challenges, Muse persevered. "I am delighted to be the first female equestrian in the country. It was a dream of mine for many years. During that time, I faced numerous difficulties and challenges. There were no women in Mogadishu who had dared to pursue this path. I didn’t even know where to find horses in the city, but despite these obstacles, I persevered and overcame them," Muse shared.

Her adventure has also sparked interest among Mogadishu’s residents. Mohamed Adam Hassan, a local, expressed his admiration after seeing Muse ride through the city. "Today, I saw a woman riding a horse alone. I followed her from KM4 junction to the Banadir area. Mogadishu is now peaceful, and you can travel freely wherever you wish. I am inspired to learn horse riding myself and perhaps leave behind the tuk-tuk vehicles we use now," he said.

In the near future, Muse has ambitions to take her passion to the global stage. "My dream was not limited to riding in Mogadishu, Somalia. I also aspired to represent my country on the international stage. It is important to note that we have an equestrian federation, and through this federation, I hope to represent Somalia," she said.
