Moldovan President Maia Sandu has secured re-election, reinforcing her position as a key advocate for change in the country.

Her victory comes amid growing concerns that Moldova could become a target for Russian aggression, especially following Russia's invasion of neighbouring Ukraine.

In a competitive election, Sandu defeated Alexandr Stoianoglo, a former prosecutor supported by the pro-Russian Socialists.

Moldovans in Chisinau reacted to pro-European President Maia Sandu winning the elections.

"I am very happy because I consider Maia Sandu to be our only chance for the youth to have a future and to remain here, a Moldovan student said.

Since applying for EU membership in 2022, Sandu has actively sought Western support, proposing extensive reforms aimed at combating corruption and attracting investment. She has framed EU accession as Moldova's "Marshall Plan," emphasizing its potential for economic recovery.
