Nigeria: Demonstrators vow to continue despite President's call for end to protests - Video

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu called for an end to the nationwide protests and an immediate halt to the violence on August 4 following a severe crackdown by security forces.

The demonstrations, which began last week in response to economic hardships, have seen thousands of Nigerians taking to the streets to protest government policies and the rising cost of living.

While the scale of the protests has lessened in many areas since Thursday, organizers remain firm in their stance, stating that Tinubu’s address will not dissuade them.

Amnesty International has reported that at least 13 protesters were killed by security forces on the first day of the protests, though police have confirmed only seven deaths and denied any wrongdoing.

In a televised address, Tinubu acknowledged the public’s frustration and urged protesters to stop their demonstrations and engage in dialogue. He stressed the need to avoid further violence, stating, “We must stop further bloodshed.”

"The violence and repressions are just attempts to silence and control us, and the propaganda cannot sway or fool us. The struggle for a new and better Nigeria continues. We must not be tired. The future of Nigeria depends on our determination at this moment, Omole Ibukun, Initiator of Creative Change Centre told AFP.
