Nigeria has deported 828 foreigners who were living in the country without proper residency permits.

The announcement was made on January 28 by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during a media briefing in Abuja.

The deportation was carried out by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

According to the minister, the government did not find any criminal activities linked to those deported. He explained that the exercise was simply to enforce Nigeria’s immigration laws.

Nigeria’s constitution requires foreigners to have valid permits to live in the country. The NIS estimates that about 300,000 illegal immigrants, mainly from Chad, Niger, Benin, and Cameroon, are currently in Nigeria.

The minister also announced that residency permits for expatriates will no longer be renewed automatically, local reports indicate.

Special reasons must now be provided for any renewal requests.

This action is part of Nigeria’s effort to manage its immigration system and ensure that all residents comply with the law.
