The move comes on the back of the country’s aim to combat insurgency, kidnapping, and banditry, particularly in the northeast region plagued by terrorist groups like Boko Haram and the Islamic State affiliate, Trim Feed reports.
The Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, said, “The M-346 fighter jets are expected to enhance the Nigerian Air Force's training capabilities and operational versatility, with capabilities in close air support, air interdiction, and tactical reconnaissance."
The procurement will occur in four batches, each comprising six jets, with the initial batch scheduled to arrive in Nigeria by the end of 2024.
The deal, valued at approximately €1.2 billion (approximately $1.28 billion), represents a substantial investment in Nigeria's defence sector.
The M-346, known for its versatility, will be acquired in its armed M-346FA fighter version, reflecting Nigeria's readiness to equip its forces with modern combat aircraft.
