Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the leader of the ruling Thai coalition, Pheu Thai has been elected as Thailand's youngest Prime Minister at the age of 37.

Her election marks a significant milestone in the country's political landscape, as she steps into a role previously held by her father, Thaksin Shinawatra, and her aunt, Yingluck Shinawatra.

Paetongtarn secured 319 votes in the House of Representatives, emerging as the sole candidate from her Pheu Thai party’s ruling coalition. This decisive victory comes just two days after the removal of ex-PM Srettha.

As the daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and the niece of former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, Paetongtarn's political lineage is well-established. Her family's influence in Thai politics has been both prominent and controversial, with both Thaksin and Yingluck having faced significant challenges during their tenure.

Paetongtarn's rise to power is seen by many as a continuation of her family's political legacy, but she also brings her own vision and leadership style to the table. Her youth and fresh perspective are expected to bring new energy to the government, addressing contemporary issues and fostering innovation.

"I decided that it's about time to do something for the country and for the party, as well. I hope that I can do my best to make the country go forward," she told reporters at her party's headquarters in Bangkok. "I really hope that I can make the people feel confident that we can build opportunities to improve the quality of life and to empower all Thais."

A political newcomer, Paetongtarn was one of three Pheu Thai prime ministerial candidates in last May's national elections, making international headlines by giving birth just two weeks before the vote.
