Philippine schools now integrate AI into learning: Premiere state U- University of the Philippines at the forefront in Asia
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is gradually making its way into and gaining acceptance in the Philippine education sector, as revealed in a survey conducted by Instructure, a NYSE-listed education technology company.
This insight is part of the "2023 State Of Student Success and Engagement in Higher Education" study.
During a virtual press conference, Ryan Lufkin, Instructure Vice President for Global Strategy, highlighted the University of the Philippines (UP) as a notable example of the Philippines leading the AI conversation in Asian education. UP recently introduced the "University of the Philippines Principles for Responsible and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence," offering guidelines to navigate the development and use of AI within the university and the country.
“When we look at the University of the Philippines, they actually already had guidelines for generative AI use on their campus established on their website available for students. One of the biggest challenges that we face is students and educators not knowing exactly when it’s acceptable to use AI or when not to,” Lufkin said.
While UP has set guidelines for generative AI use, Lufkin acknowledged that other educational institutions in the Philippines are recognizing the presence of AI, with 46 percent of survey respondents reporting the introduction of light guidelines on generative AI use.
According to the survey, 83 percent of students utilize generative AI, such as ChatGPT, for research and writing, 52 percent for test preparation, and 47 percent for learning a foreign language. Teachers also find generative AI valuable for creating content, research, writing, and personalized learning.
Instructure noted a cautious adoption of AI in the country but emphasized the inevitability of AI's role in the future of education. Lufkin explained the potential benefits, such as students engaging with AI tutors for additional support, and teachers using AI to generate course content, quizzes, story problems, and initial grading.
While some universities in the US may not have set guidelines to foster innovation, Lufkin stressed the importance of establishing boundaries and guidelines for responsible AI use.
