A powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit Vanuatu in Oceania on December 17, killing at least nine people and leaving many trapped under collapsed buildings.

Rescue teams worked through the night in the capital, Port Vila, to save survivors, with some voices still heard under the rubble.

The quake caused major destruction, flattening buildings, cracking walls, and triggering landslides.

China confirmed that two of its citizens were among the affected persons. The Chinese Embassy has since sent help to assist with treatment and recovery.

Australia and New Zealand have also sent rescue teams, including medics and search dogs, to support the island nation. A state of emergency has been declared, and a curfew is in place as the government and aid groups scramble to provide relief.

The quake destroyed two water reserves, damaged power lines, and left many in Vanuatu without safe shelter. Thousands are staying outside, for fear of aftershocks.
