S.A patients receive free treatment on Chinese hospital ship: Video

Hundreds of South African patients are receiving treatment from a Chinese hospital ship docked in Cape Town as part of a joint medical exercise between China and South Africa.

The "Peace Ark," a large medical vessel, arrived on August 22 and will provide free medical care for seven days, according to South Africa's army health service.

The initiative is designed to strengthen military and diplomatic ties between the two nations. Medical staff from the South African Military Health Service (SAMHS) are working alongside Chinese medical personnel to offer specialised health services, surgical procedures, and in-patient treatment.

The ship, which can treat up to 700 outpatients daily, is equipped with advanced medical instruments and laboratory services. Patients have been receiving a range of treatments, including cupping therapy and dental care.

Despite being Africa’s most advanced economy, South Africa faces widespread poverty and high unemployment, making quality healthcare inaccessible for many.

The South African Navy and Air Force are providing logistical and technical support for the medical ship.
