Several children lost their lives in a stampede during a holiday funfair on December 18 in Basorun, Oyo State, southwestern Nigeria, officials have confirmed.

The event, held at the Islamic High School, was organised by the Women In Need Of Guidance and Support Foundation for families.

Governor Seyi Makinde announced that security forces have arrested the organisers.

“This is a very sad day,” Governor Makinde said in a statement. “We sympathise with the parents whose joy has suddenly been turned to mourning due to these deaths.”

Children injured in the stampede were taken to nearby hospitals, and parents were urged to check for their missing children.

Video footage from the scene showed a large crowd of children as some were being carried away from an open field. Nigeria’s emergency services deployed a team to assist the victims.

Organisers of the program had planned to host up to 5,000 children this year, promising prizes like scholarships.

According to Governor Makinde, an investigation has begun into the incident. He warned that “Anyone directly or remotely involved in this disaster will be held accountable.”
