Severe storms wreak havoc in Central Europe, Italy braces for impact
Severe storms have ravaged Central Europe and are now hitting Italy with heavy rain, strong winds, and widespread flooding warnings.
Flooding has already hit Pescara, and weather alerts are in place from northern Emilia-Romagna to the far south.
The storms, driven by Storm Boris, follow devastating floods in Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, and Austria, which have claimed at least 21 lives. Croatia, Hungary, and Slovakia are also bracing for possible flooding in the coming days.
Impact on Poland
In southern Poland, where over 40,000 people were evacuated from the town of Nysa, 5,000 soldiers have been deployed to assist in flood relief efforts. Floodwaters continue to spread in some areas, while others are beginning to recede.
The town of Glucholazy saw its main bridge collapse, and streets were left covered in mud. Six people have been confirmed dead, though higher death tolls have been denied by authorities.
Government Response
Poland's Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, has declared a month-long state of natural disaster, with Wroclaw expected to face the worst flooding soon.
The region remains on high alert as Storm Boris continues to bring extreme weather across Europe.
