South Sudan negotiates impending suspension from SWIFT
South Sudan's Foreign Affairs Minister Dr James Pitia Morgan has negotiated the potential suspension of the East African country from the global financial code system, SWIFT.
The government's actions raised concerns regarding SWIFT codes and money laundering, prompting an assessment by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), according to Information Minister Michael Makuei.
Makuei told journalists that "the government of South Sudan was accused of violating the nation's rules and regulations, especially with issues related to SWIFT codes and the fight against money laundering."
Foreign affairs and international cooperation minister James Pitia Morgan negotiated with the FATF during a recent visit to the United States, Makuei said.
"After the assessment was made, the FATF found that the government of Sudan is conforming to all the financial rules and regulations and as such, it does not require any financial action against it," he was quoted by local media Eye Radio.
James Pitia Morgan was recently appointed as the minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation by the President of South Sudan Salva Kiir. He replaced Deng Dau Deng, the ministry's acting foreign minister, who took over in March.
