This is how long the world stays up to watch TV

According to the latest findings from the Global Web Index (GWI) Report, TV screen time remains a significant part of daily media consumption, with certain countries leading the way in hours spent watching television content — both traditional broadcast and streaming.

The GWI report, which surveyed internet users aged 16 to 64 across various countries, highlights notable disparities in average daily TV screen time. While streaming platforms like Netflix, YouTube, and Amazon Prime have surged in popularity, traditional TV still commands a substantial share of attention in many regions.

Below are the countries that top the list in terms of average daily TV screen time per user:

United States – 4.39 Hours per Day

Despite being a digital content hub, traditional TV still commands a stronghold in the U.S. However, much of the viewing has shifted to on-demand content via streaming platforms like Hulu, Netflix, Disney+, and others, blending the lines between “TV time” and “screen time.”

South Africa – 4.04 Hours per Day

South Africa stands out in the Sub-Saharan region with high TV screen time. Broadcast TV remains widely popular, but digital consumption is growing, particularly among younger viewers using streaming services on mobile devices.

Brazil – 4.4 Hours per Day

Brazilians are enthusiastic consumers of entertainment, blending traditional TV viewing with streaming. Telenovelas remain a cultural staple, while platforms like Globoplay, Netflix, and YouTube have carved a significant niche in the market.

United Kingdom - 3.54 Hours per Day

Compared to countries like the Philippines, Brazil, or South Africa (where average daily TV time exceeds 3.5–4 hours), the UK’s TV screen time is more moderate. This reflects a broader diversification of media consumption habits in the UK — more time is also spent on social media, digital news, podcasts, and mobile video content beyond traditional TV.

Chile - 3.43 Hours per Day

Chilean viewers continue to watch a considerable amount of traditional television, especially for news, telenovelas, and sports events. However, services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, HBO Max, and YouTube have gained strong traction, particularly among younger and urban audiences.
