Uganda: Police find 17 human skulls at suspected shrine - Video

Ugandan police have unearthed 17 human skulls, including those of children, from an underground chamber at a suspected shrine near the village of Kabanga.

The skulls were found on July 28 by local children gathering firewood about 40 kilometres (24 miles) west of Kampala.

According to police spokesman Majid Karim, the skulls were located in metallic boxes within a well-constructed underground chamber beneath one of three ruined shrines on a hillside.

"Police swung into action very fast and we got some four, four metallic boxes in a hole that was well built, and we removed them, and brought them to the police station and when we opened them we recovered 17 skulls," Karim told AFP.

The skulls are currently being examined to determine their age, sex, and burial date. Initial examinations revealed that three of the skulls belonged to children.

Karim also mentioned that the search might uncover other body parts, urging locals to provide any information that could assist in the investigation.

Reports suggest that the site may have been used for worship in the past. Police have also linked the suspected owner of the site to the murder of a prominent traditional Baganda leader, Daniel Bbosa, who was killed by hired gunmen in Kampala earlier this year.

"He is a suspect of a murder case of one engineer called Daniel Bossa," Karim said.
