What we know

  • Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has expressed optimism about the country’s prospects of joining some of the world’s superpowers. He attributes this belief to the successful hosting of two international conferences, the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and G-77 plus China.
  • The Non-Aligned Movement is a forum of 120 countries that are not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc while the G-77 plus China is a platform of 77 developing countries including China focused on making their collective voices heard.
  • Museveni said during a televised address on January 25 on the eve of the National Resistance Army 38th Liberation Day celebrations that a Russian Delegate during one of the conferences had mentioned that only superpowers could successfully organize such events.
  • The events witnessed the attendance of 1,918 delegates from 129 countries including sixteen Presidents, nine Vice Presidents, sixteen Prime Ministers and Seven Special Category Representatives.
  • President Museveni has also emphasized the country’s capabilities to address emerging threats to ensure security and well-being of all citizens.

What they said

The president mentioned that efforts have began to work towards improving the country and becoming self-reliant in some areas.

"We possess the capacity to achieve anything without corruption. I have instructed the Engineering Brigade to commence preparations for building the Standard Gauge Railway, rather than solely relying on external assistance," he was quoted by Nile Post.
