Up to 1,000 women and children in need of medical care will soon be evacuated from Gaza to Europe, according to Hans Kluge, the head of the World Health Organisation's Europe branch.

In comments published on Monday, October 21, Kluge confirmed that Israel is committed to facilitating these medical evacuations over the coming months, with support from the WHO and participating European countries.

Israel, which is besieging the war-devastated Palestinian territory, "is committed to 1,000 more medical evacuations within the next months to the European Union," Hans Kluge told AFP.

The announcement follows a report from UN investigators alleging that Israel has been deliberately targeting health facilities in Gaza and committing acts of violence against medical personnel, which they termed "crimes against humanity."

Rik Peeperkorn, WHO representative in the occupied Palestinian territories, previously stated that around 10,000 individuals required urgent medical evacuation from Gaza.

Since the latest conflict erupted in October 2023, the WHO Europe has already coordinated 600 medical evacuations to seven European countries.
