"You let us down": Trudeau's exit divides Canadians ahead of elections - Video
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation after nine years in office, sparking mixed reactions among Ottawa residents.
While some welcomed the decision, others expressed concerns about the political implications for Canada’s upcoming elections.
"It's time for some new, good, real people to put into office. Okay, we gave you ten years; you let us down. Step down as prime minister and step down as liberal leader. Thank you,” said Jonathan Machado, an Ottawa resident, in an interview with AFP.
For others, Trudeau’s departure raised worries about the country’s future leadership. “It scares me a little for the upcoming elections, especially with the opposition parties, the Conservative opposition party. It scares me a bit. I'm afraid we're going to rush to them as an alternative. But is it really the best alternative for Canadians and Canada? I don't know," said Alexis Langevin, a 28-year-old student.
Jamie Schmidt, a 24-year-old student cartoonist, emphasised the need for change. "I think there was a general loss of confidence within the party, but also within Canadians, within the Canadian population. So I'd say it's a good thing, and it would be a good idea to start again and see how we can improve things for Canadians, but also within the government," Schmidt said.
Trudeau announced his intent to step down but plans to remain in office until the Liberal Party selects a new leader. In the interim, parliament will be prorogued—or suspended—until March 24, 2025.
