Tanzanian archipelago, Zanzibar, has unveiled plans for the construction of the first seven-star hotel in East Africa.

The luxurious seven-star hotel is expected to be built on Pemba Island in the Indian Ocean, Tanzanian media the Citizen reported.

The director of Zanzibar's investment authority Sharif Ali Sharif (ZIPA) told reporters about the government's plans for the development of the project.

"We have many exciting developments on the horizon... but one stands out in particular, the arrival of East Africa's first-ever seven-star hotel on Pemba Island," he said.

He also added that the project is being led by President of Zanzibar Hussein Mwinyi. The leader of the archipelago state is also the son of former Tanzania president Ali Hassan Mwinyi.

While the existence of seven-star hotels has been debated, the iconic Burj Al Arab Jumeirah in Dubai has been described as a seven-star hotel by reporters because of its standard being recognised as beyond the traditional five-star standard.
