A family in Gweru, Zimbabwe were shocked to the core when armed assailants hijacked their home for over 5 hours for a very unusual robbery operation on Tuesday night.

The fully armed 5-man gang, according to Zimbabwe news outlet the Chronicle, locked up the family in one room and spent hours cooking a meal of spiced chicken which they consumed before demanding money from their victims.

The robbers who had weapons including machetes and knives ransacked the house after feasting, and bolted off with valuables and monies to the sum of $2,500.

The incident was confirmed by Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko who said the suspects got away with items including cell phones, food stuff and cash.

“Police are investigating a case of robbery in which a family in Northlea suburb was robbed when five men armed with machetes and a knife broke into the house through a window on Tuesday night.

“One of the occupants of the house, a 52-year-old woman who was sleeping together with two other family members heard some strange noise around midnight and went to investigate. She was intercepted by five men who ordered her to return to the room. They then woke up the other two occupants and dragged them into one room,” Inspector Mahoko was quoted.

“They got to the kitchen, took some meat in the kitchen and started cooking while some were relaxing in the lounge watching television. After eating the food, they ransacked the house and attacked the victims as they demanded money,” he added.

Inspector Mahoko further noted that one of the suspects tried to rape a female victim in the house but fortunately was unsuccessful.

According to the Chronicle, the police has launched a manhunt for the suspects who are still at large.
